Common wheat rust diseases

These are fungal infections caused by different fungi. Fungi have no chlorophyll and thus lack photosynthetic capability. They absorb nutrients from either living or dead host tissue.

Wheat as any other crop is also prone to pests during different growth stages. In this article we are going to examine common rust diseases that poses a challenge to good wheat harvests. These are fungal infections caused by different fungi. Fungi have no chlorophyll and thus lack photosynthetic capability. They absorb nutrients from either living or dead host tissue.

Stem Rust (Black Rust)

Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici

They are dark reddish brown lesions, and may occur on both sides of the leaves, on the stems, and on the spikes. With light infections the lesions are usually separate and scattered, but with heavy infections they may be dense. Infections are usually light and develop from wind-borne spores that may have travelled long distances. The disease can develop rapidly in high moisture areas.

 Stripe Rust (Yellow Rust)

Puccinia striiformis

They are stripes of rust, yellow to orange-yellow usually form narrow stripes on the leaves the stripes also can be found on leaf sheaths, necks, and glumes. Infections are caused by wind-borne spores from long distances. The disease can develop in high moisture areas. The infected tissues may become brown and dry as the plant matures or becomes stressed. Severe early infection can result in plant stunting.

Brown Rust

Puccinia triticina

Orange-to-brown color pustules. Infections can be easily confused with yellow rust during early stages. Brown rust pustules tend to be scattered at random, compared with the more striped symptoms of yellow rust.
