Post-harvest management of avocados

Avocado is highly susceptible to post harvest diseases like anthracnose, dothierella fruit rot, avocado stem end rot, which contribute to the highest percentage of losses.

Avocados are a popular subtropical singular climacteric fruit of high economic importance. The European Union is the biggest importer of the bulk of the fruit coming from countries such as South Africa, Chile, Israel and including Kenya which has created significant interest in its growing.

The fruit is highly nutritious, being rich in vitamins A, B, C, minerals, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, and antioxidants. The biggest challenge is that the fruit is highly susceptible to qualitative and quantitative post-harvest losses that can range from 5- 50%.

Successful maintenance of avocado fruit quality during the supply chain depends on many aspects which include; orchard management practices, harvesting practices, packing operations, post-harvest treatments, temperature management, transportation and storage conditions, and ripening at destination.

Post-harvest losses are mostly attributed to flesh softening, decay, physiological disorders, and improper temperature management. Management of the supply chain is solely done to provide the fruit with the most favorable conditions to extend storage life and retain quality and nutritional attributes of the fruit.

The fruit is highly susceptible to post-harvest diseases like anthracnose, dothierella fruit rot, avocado stem end rot, which contribute to the highest percentage of losses.

FASTANO 500 SC is an excellent broad-spectrum post-harvest fungicide containing fludioxonil in the phenylpyrrole group for post-harvest treatment of avocados. Fludioxonil is a widely used broad spectrum fungicide which is non-systemic with a long residual activity. It inhibits the synthesis of transport- associated phosphorylation of glucose as well as preventing glycerol synthesis.

FASTANO 500SC is formulated in a safe suspension concentrate liquid formation with effective protectant and treatment properties on the various post-harvest diseases with its unique interference with fungal growth.

The application rate: 40 ml in 100 L of water. (Dip freshly harvested Avocados fruit in a well prepared solution)

  • PYRABOSS 450 EW is a broad spectrum translaminar, protective and curative fungicide for the control of a wide range of diseases, especially as post-harvest dipping chemical for control of post-harvest diseases of Tropical fruits and Pineapple diseases. It acts by inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis, a critical component of fungal cell membranes, to extend storage life of post-harvest cut flowers, Pineapples and tropical fruits during long distance transportation and sales storage.
