The main season for coffee farming is here. Coffee farming is not like any other crop. Its farming activities require timeliness without delay for a farmer to be able to increase productivity and get good quality beans. Delays in conducting coffee farming husbandry lead to loss of yield and increase in cost of production especially in disease and pest management.
In order to realize increased productivity and good quality beans, do the following this February;
- Proper pruning,
- Zinc and Boron sprays,
- Pest control,
- Leaf rust control,
- Digging where necessary,
- Application of manure mixed with Humipower
- Application of lime where necessary.
Correct zinc deficiency on your crop. Deficiency causes interveinal chlorosis, small, deformed and abnormal leaves, fun branching and longer internodes. Apply Zinc Gold (70% zinc) one or two month before flowering at a rate of 20mls/20ltrs of water. This induces flower bud. Also spray Vitabor Gold (15% boron,6%N and other micro element) to provide boron necessary to prevent flower abortion and die back.
This February, dry spell encourages attack by pest which include Thrips and Green scales. Eradicate by spraying Presento as the best product for the control of the sucking pest at a rate of 10g/20l of water.
Coffee leaf rust is the most preference disease this February due to dry period. Use Green cop at a rate of 70g/20l of water to prevent and Milestone at a rate of 20mls to cure the disease. Integra at 3mls/20l of water should be incorporated in all your insecticide and fungicide sprays to increase rate of action, avoid being washed and make them more effective
